I don’t know about the rest of you guys but I certainly made the most of Easter this year and totally stuffed myself with chocolate eggs, lollies, treats and sweets.

It was a bit of a blow out (one that I was happy to have) but to make myself feel a little better, I also decided that I wouldn’t be overly concerned with recording the tests I did over that period. I’m pretty fastidious normally but you can see from the shot here that there is a distinct gap for the Easter break.

It was also my wedding anniversary you see so there may have been some drink of beer and a lot of eating of delicious (read: fat riddled)…

You know how some days, nothing goes well and your diabetes is just a right royal pain in the proverbial?

Well, today was the total opposite – here is my day:

Wake at 11.6mmol/L – I’m high (again) and experience tells me that will be the start of a terrible day
Both of my colleagues are away today so I’m doing the work of three people – STRESS
Head out to a meeting at 3pm and realise that I’ve not eaten breakfast or lunch (sorry to all the cringing dietitians out there!) so I hesitantly buy a ft long subway
Meeting done, it’s back to work for an hour of hard graft before heading out to a game of squash which is

If you’re like me, you might read the odd article/tweet by an American, citing their BG in mg/dl. It tends to be a little tricky to empathise with them when they complain of a BG of 40, or 240 – what on earth does this mean?

I found this even more tricky when I trialled the Dexcom CGMS. It was all in mg/dl so I had to get good at conversions in my head.

The simple answer? Multiply your mmol/l result (e.g 5.6) by 18 (to get 101 mg/dl). More background on the measurements here. Suffice to say the rest of the world is using mmol/l but our Yankee friends are still using the traditional mg/dl measurement.

I went to my GP on Tuesday for a non-diabetes related issue. She mentioned how well I’d done with my HbA1c over the last year. Almost in the same breath, she absolutely baulked when I told her I do around ten BG tests a day. She visibly gasped – and proceeded to tell me I was doing way too much and should think about cutting back to three. I took a deep breath and paused, and tried to be calm when explaining to her that the only way I’ve managed to get said HbA1c down that low is through testing and keeping on top of what my blood sugars are doing. I mean, let’s think about an average day broken…

I was feeling a bit annoyed when I arrived at work on Tuesday having woken up at 2.8mmol/L and it only being the second day back and all but I got such a nice surprise in my inbox which helped snap me out of it so I thought I’d share it with you guys too.

I’ll start by saying that I have some of the most thoughtful work colleagues. A couple of them who sit nearest me have been privy to the incessant blood testing, swearing and cursing at high and low BGs and the constant wipping out of the pump and so now, whenever they see a site or hear a news article about diabetes it invariably comes my…
