I dusted off my BG record-keeping sheets today, determined to write down some numbers for a whole week and stay on top of basal rates, carb ratios, correction factors etc. That’s the thing with pumping – if only you could put in the hard work at the very beginning then sit with those ratios for all time – not so! I always knew I’d probably slacken off a bit after about 16 months of hard yakka and conscientious monitoring and record-keeping over my pregnancy and beforehand. Heck, I reckon I deserved the break. But, it’s now 12 weeks after my baby was born and I’m determined to put some systems in place to make sure I keep up a good…

…. so what do we call this decade? If last one was the noughties, and the following one is the 20s, what is this one coming up? The teens?

It’s been a great year for BeingDiabetic. Visitor numbers have quadrupled, the community is growing and getting stronger, and we’ve had several face-to-face meetings (albeit only in Auckland and Nelson so far but it’s a start!). Keep up the awesome work everyone, and thanks again for being a great, interactive audience willing to help each other out.

On a personal note it’s been a pretty full-on year too and one I’m really proud of from a diabetes point of view. Only you lot (and maybe our partners to a degree) know…

I went for my 28 week scan on Monday – the first one I’ve had since the 20 week one, when bubs was all on track and looking pretty normal.

The good news is that he still looks normal, but not so cool is he’s tracking bigger than the average baby of his gestation. I watched as the guy did the scan and noticed immediately when he measured the baby’s head and it came up as the size of a 29 week 3 day old baby, and then he measured round the tummy which came in as a 30 week and 1 day old baby. He wasn’t going to be drawn on making a comment so I waited until I…

…. This insulin resistance thing in pregnancy is out of control. I just had soup and two bits of bread and had to bolus 17.25 units of short acting insulin for it…. Jeepers, that amount would have put me in hospital in a diabetic coma six months ago! And I’m told my resistance will increase yet. Crazy.

I got an email a couple of months ago from an old friend who’d discovered she had gestational diabetes (pregnancy diabetes). I have mixed feelings about gestational diabetes really. Mainly I feel sorry for the women who get it, because they don’t usually find out until they’re between 24 and 28 weeks through their pregnancy. All of a sudden they’ve got this condition which could seriously affect their baby’s health and they have to deal with all of the fear and hassle and complication of injections and blood tests and all of that stuff we all take in our stride – as if being pregnant wasn’t enough of a condition to be careful of. It must be a real shock…

I went round to visit a friend of mine today – a type one diabetic friend who in September this year had her first baby.

Now, I can’t speak for anyone but myself – but as a woman of a certain age, whose friends are now starting to have children, I’ve put a bit of thought into how this might be achieved with a chronic condition like diabetes. I’ve done a bit of reading: frankly it sounds bloody hard, unpredictable, high maintenance, risky work. Not only that, but if the scaremongering on the internet is to be believed:

A recent study showed that both types of diabetes greatly increase the risk of complications during pregnancy. The study revealed…
