I’ve been in denial for a while, even with getting on the scales at the hospital a few weeks ago. With the sole focus lately having been my blood sugars, you’d think I’d be fit, healthy, spritely, and above all, slim.

Not so. Not that I’m a complete porker (depending on your perspective of course, I imagine if you live in an African country you would probably think I was pretty gynormous), but I have to say I’m not in the best shape I’ve been in my life lately.

Thus, I dusted off my old Weight Watchers books on the weekend and have added that to the measuring, weighing and scrutising of my food. Hey – what’s one more thing…

I’ve got a google mail account and one of the interesting things about it is the ads which appear in the frame around your mailbox. (see the example on the right hand side of this post). I always find this a bit ‘big brother-ish’ because these links relate to keywords from the emails in your inbox. For example, this is what I got from an email from a friend of mine who’s had gestational diabetes (I’m going to post her piece shortly). When I got married and had emails from different suppliers and friends with the word ‘wedding’ in them, I got alllll sorts of ads on the right hand side.

So anyway, I have clicked on a few of…

…. that we have an increasing rate of obesity and (to a lesser degree) type two diabetes in this country?

I stopped by the trusty Shell on my way home tonight in search of a quick Sprite Zero fix (I know, I know – aspartame is evil, but I’m running out of vices*). Seeing as I was planning to consume said sugar-free product at home, I was amenable to a larger bottle. I couldn’t believe it – 600ml of Sprite Zero cost $3.20; 1.5L of Sprite Zero cost $2.99 – not on special! I think most humans have an inherent streak which seeks out a bargain, so you can see why most people would opt for the larger bottle. And…

So as I was wandering around the supermarket in a daze on Fri, I spied the Hubbards low sugar cereal, Not So Sweet. I’ve seen this on the shelves before but this time, in a moment of weakness, I chucked it in the trolley.

It’s Not So Cheap at $5.79 a pack, but then you do get 550 grams which is a heck of a lot better than the Vogels I normally buy at $6.60 odd which only yields 500g.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but as a marketer myself I’m pegging there are a few of us out there – my attention is easily gained by anything that claims to be good for diabetics, or low in…

Very interesting. I saw an article come through today saying a two-year Israeli study published in the New England Journal of Medicine last week “shows low-carb and Mediterranean diets helped patients lose more weight and lowered their cholesterol and sugar levels more than patients on low-fat or non-restricted carb diets”. See the full article here.

It makes perfect sense for those of us on insulin…. less carbs = less overall insulin; less insulin = less bulking.

I’m a pretty rational person but I have to say I’m sure I eat too many carbs. I have it in my head that I need them to fill me up. I’m going to have to take another look at my…
