Catch-22

1.
a. A situation in which a desired outcome or solution is impossible to attain because of a set of inherently illogical rules or conditions: “In the Catch-22 of a closed repertoire, only music that is already familiar is thought to deserve familiarity” Joseph McLennan.
b. The rules or conditions that create such a situation.
2. A situation or predicament characterized by absurdity or senselessness.
3. A contradictory or self-defeating course of action: “The Catch-22 of his administration was that every grandiose improvement scheme began with community dismemberment” Village Voice.

My catch 22 of late has been the fact that I have a $7,000 pump to pay off in order to improve my condition, and have thus accepted a…

It takes a little bit of getting used to, this pump business. On MDI (multiple daily injections) you can’t help but see how much insulin you have left in the vial because you are looking at it every time you inject.

However, on the pump you don’t look so much. The cartridge is round the side, at the back – you’re always looking at the screen as you navigate through all of the programming options. Which is not to say you don’t have full visibility at all times regarding how much there is left in the cartridge – there’s a display on the home screen indicating how many units you have left, and how much battery power you have…

Finally back to the gym today – feels like I’ve been gone a long time!

I’ve always had extra diabetes issues in association with exercise so was anticipating this morning’s RPM class to throw me completely – looks like I might have got away with it this time somehow though – not that I’m complaining!

I’d gone high in the night for the first time really since I went on the pump – my alarm went off at 4am and I did a blood test, returning a 13.0. I took 2u then and got up again at 5.20am to get to the gym in time for a 6am class. At 5.20 I was still 11.8 so took another .75units and…

I had a very special wedding to go to on the weekend – my sister in law’s and her fiance’s. I love a good wedding, especially now that I’ve had mine and realise the work that goes in – feels all the more decadent to sit back and enjoy it without all the effort of organising it yourself.

Of course this also was the first time I’ve wanted to wear a dress with the pump. I tend not to wear dresses at work as an overhang from the injections days where I’d have to head to the loo every time I wanted to shoot up (apparently it’s not professional to hoist your dress up in full view of everyone in order…

Well one of the main ideas of this blog was to create a destination for others like me to learn from my experiences on my journey to a pump and beyond, and I’m sorry I’ve not been giving you hourly updates – I would love to but work and life have been getting in the way!

So I’m now at the end of day three of being a pumper. It’s swell! Golly I must have saved myself at least 15-20 injections so far – fantastic! Having said that, I’ve made up for it in blood tests. I’ve been testing every hour on the hour during waking hours, and every three hours in the night (that’s 1am and 4am tests the…
