We are all well too aware of the hazards of eating crappy food and putting weight on for no other reason than being a little over indulgent but my friend and I were talking about how us T1’s have got a little more than the average person to factor in if we want to be the belle of the ball. If I exercise I tend to go low and gobble some glucose, if I aren’t paying attention then I have hypos, since going on…

Hi Everyone!

Hopefully you have all had a great break

Every year for our summer break, Andy and I like to head off somewhere remote for a good week or more to relax with some close friends before we have to start thinking about getting back to work and because we don’t have kids, we ALWAYS go camp.

The joys of camping are boundless I reckon. Sunshine, beaches, BBQs, a chillibin full of beer (and insulin), the road trip with it’s compulsory pies and gas station snacks, the music, feet on the dashboard, card games and scrabble. It’s got everything.

This year, we went and plonked ourselves 5 hours north of Auckland in Taupo Bay with another couple who were camping…

So – big shout outs to my friends at http://www.diabetessupplies.co.nz/ for making my life easy by having a simple-to-use transactional website which I can log onto at lunchtime and order glucose tablets from – which I did today. Last time I did this they arrived on my doorstep merely days afterwards, and if you order more than a hundred bucks’ worth you get the delivery for free.

Hi everyone – hope you’ve been having a good weekend. I had a much needed very chilled one which involved catching up with friends, doing some mandatory chores around the house, watching a hilarious comedy DVD with my husband and sister + brother in law and one of my favourite things to relax by – BAKING.

My Mum used to bake a lot when we were kids (and she still does – she is a BRILLIANT baker) and over the last few years I’ve taken up the craft myself. Pretty ironic as a diabetic really, given that a lot of the stuff I cook is sugary and bad for you. It’s always good to have people lined up to give…

Well I have to admit I’m absolutely gutted. I just got my ‘results’ back from the CGMS and of the 720 possible readings (based on a pulse every five mins over 2.5 days) I should have got, I ended up with a grand total of THIRTY EIGHT.

To try to draw conclusions from this ramshackle collection of readings which at best resembles a madman hitting random numbers on a keyboard is virtually impossible.

In fact I’ve just gone back to see how many blood finger prick tests I took over that very time period and ironically, it also equals 38.

No insights on overnights or exercise to be had here. Move along please!

Not sure of my next moves but…

Yup, night two of three of my CGMS has been and gone and the high morning blood sugars I have four days out of five are nowhere to be seen. Last night resulted in a 2.30am low (3.1) and a blood sugar of 3.8 on waking. Without the low I’d be very pleased with that night! I have one night left for the overnight highs to come back so we can see what’s going on. Strange to wish for it when I’ve spent the last few weeks wishing for the opposite. But I’m starting to look like the boy who cried wolf.

Aside from that, I’m finding I’m getting used to being attached to a machine. Even after two nights…

She didn’t feel it because of diabetes-related nerve damage. Awful – poor lady (although I can see why it’s made headlines around the world, who would ever guess such a thing would happen?).

I noticed an article come across today saying that every week 100 people in the UK have amputations due to poorly controlled diabetes. (see here). I don’t believe in wallowing in all the negatives of this condition but once in a while reminders like this make me all the more focussed on getting my control as…

Apparently this CGMS has been out for about ten years and while I’m very grateful to be able to use it for free, it’s starting to show its age. The fantastic staff member at North Shore diabetes clinic gave me the low down and inserted it for me then showed me the buttons. There are only a couple of buttons on it and the user interface seems pretty rudimentary.

One of the main things which finally got me to set up this blog is that I’m finally on the road to an insulin pump.

I’ve been having all sorts of problems overnight lately (quite possibly dawn phenomenon) – going to bed with perfect 6-ish blood sugars and then waking up with BMs as high as 16 (one morning recently it was 19.9). Totally ridiculous, and so frustrating, when I’ve been making a huge effort during the day – taking 10 or so finger prick tests and micro managing my injections (I’m on Lantus as a basal and Humalog as short acting).

My last HbA1c came in at 7.8 which I was really cross about, especially after all the work…
