I got an email from a reader about her son this week and thought I’d throw the question out to the community to see if we can get any other ideas (Aaron has already contributed a few). Can you guys help with this please?

T is 14 and when we go out, his supplies are in a bag that gets slung over his shoulder – well, his Dad’s shoulder actually. But he is now at that age when he doesn’t want to have to carry a ‘man bag’ with him. I guess it is just not cool.
But there is not way I let him go off with his mates without his jelly beans and meter.

One of the things I remember vividly from when I was diagnosed at 8 years old was getting this ugly, annoying little bracelet that I suddenly had to wear all the time – the good old Medic Alert. I didn’t like it very much but I didn’t have a choice and I couldn’t take it off by myself anyway so I just had to bear it.

Years later, I took that bracelet off because I got sick of people asking me what it was for and what I ‘had’ when I was at high school/university and it stayed in a drawer, hidden for quite some years. Then I travelled after uni and the Medic alert stayed well hidden in…

Thanks to Sarah for sending me this article which appeared in the Aucklander today.

Poor little four year old Jenna from the North Shore has been a T1 since she was 9 months old. That on its own would have been enough for this little sweetie to have to deal with, but she’s had to troop on through much more than that. She had the lenses in her eyes surgically removed at six weeks of age; she’s had open heart surgery to close a hole in her heart; and she has now lost all her hair to alopecia.
