Hi everyone

I got this email from a T1 reader last week (names have been blanked to protect the innocent).

#%^&*’s Mum is a nightmare with filling my two year old son up with massive amounts of sugar e.g. yesterday she gave him 2 lollipops, 2 choc biscuits, jelly, mashmallows, choc milk and pancakes with syrup in the space of 2 hours! This is despite many times asking her not to.
New strategy: phoned her and said he was at an increased risk of getting T1 diabetes and huge amounts of sugar was putting pressure on his pancreas (I realise this is a stretch). Seemed to work.

What are your thoughts on this strategy? I am not entirely sure if
…

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Today is Halloween in Canada and man do they get into it!

Every shop you look at is full of displays with pumpkins and ghouls and decorations, supermarkets are selling autumn wares, huge pumpkins, tiny pumpkins and gourds are filling the shelves and streets outside shops. Party invites are being sent out left right and centre and people are all a flutter talking non stop about what their costumes are going to be. At times I honestly feel like I’m back at high school listening to the girls talking about their ball dresses!

Seriously though, it seems to me that after Christmas, this holiday is the biggest in Canada and people absolutely love getting into it in…

Hi everyone – I got an emails from two readers last week which I would love your input on please.

ONE:

My mum is hosting a radio segment in New Plymouth which starts up soon about diabetes…along with the medical team up there and has been asking me for a name for her segment. Wondered if you had any ideas on a name and some topics you think would be important to cover? They will be talking about all kinds of things to do with diabetes and interviewing medical people on the show.
Can you help this BeingDiabetic reader out? Questions:

- what should her Mum call the show?

- what topics would you want covered in a radio…

We’ve had a few posts on this blog about non-T1 parents trying to understand diabetes from their kids’ point of view, but I’m interested in hearing from you T1 mums and dads out there who have kids on how you’ve found your kids’ understanding of the condition change as they get older. I know a regular reader, Sarah mentioned that her kids grew up from a young age hearing something like “hang on, Mummy’s just got to check her blood sugar” and I know that my son is going to have the same experience. But how do they change over time? Are they naughty and eat your sweets? Have you ever had them help you out of a hypo? Do…

Happily, even before I was diagnosed with diabetes, needles were not something that I’ve was ever been that bothered about.

I mean, I don’t think anybody is particularly looking forward to seeing a needle descend into their flesh but some are a little more squeemish than others and some of those people are inevitably diabetics.

Then there are the people around us that don’t like seeing them including our family members, colleagues and friends. I remember one colleague who had to turn away when I did finger pricks and a cousin that almost passes out when she sees a needle come out so the problem is real and it’s out there.

Personally, I can’t imagine that there are many conditions…
