Sigh. So I had to go for a fasting blood test this morning which meant getting the baby up and giving him his breakfast, getting him dressed, wrangling him in the car, hauling him into Labtests, balancing him between my feet while the blood test was carried out so he didn’t try to grab the needle, getting him home, playing with him and waiting for him to have his morning sleep before I got to eat my breakfast…. in the middle of this I had a hypo.

Had breakfast (the usual), bolused (the usual) then got on with all the other chores which had been waiting for me while I completed my four days at work. One hour passed, my…

Hi everyone

The page I put up in February listing all the pumps in the NZ market was so popular, I’ve decided to update that one as well as add a directory page for BG testers too.

You can find the lists either by going to Directory in the navigation above, or by clicking here.

As those of you who’ve been reading this blog a while know, I was extremely fortunate to be given a ‘permanent loan’ of an insulin pump from Waitemata DHB, late last year. When I was waiting to hear if I was going to be one of the lucky ones to be issued with the pump, I spoke to various people at the hospital to keep up to date. One conversation didn’t go so well because the person on the other end was telling me the committee responsible for allocating the pumps had been strongly in favour of only loaning them out to people under the age of 25 (at that point I…

Ask any punter on the street the question, “what foods should people with diabetes avoid?” and you’ll get the predictable replies like “sweets”; “biscuits”; “fizzy drink”; “cake” etc. What you are unlikely to hear is the list of those really unpredictable things like pizza, Thai, fish and chips and Chinese.

I have to admit I was as clueless as all the rest until a couple of years ago when I really started to actually monitor my BGs. And now I have a new one to add to the list: laksa. My husband makes a mean laksa (after flatting with a Malaysian chap many years ago, he has the dish down to a fine art). We had it for dinner a…
