Wow. Canada.

It has been almost six full weeks since we left New Zealand now and what an eventful six weeks they have been!

I’ve already posted about our time in America and a little bit about the trip via Tahiti so it’s about time I get you all up to date with Canada!

Of course, the first couple of weeks were busy with lots of time spent basking in the 30+ degree heat and taking an initial look around town. My former workmates in NZ had given us a gift of bikes which we immediately put to use tripping all over the city enjoying the parks, festivals and summer activities that Montréal has…

A good friend sent me a link to this page today which claims that apple cider vinegar, if taken before a high carbohydrate meal can lessen the BG spike after it. It mentions the benefits for T2 mainly but this is definitely one benefit which could span both T1 and T2. Interesting.

I have also heard in past that linseed/flaxseed can do the same thing. Ask any punter on the street the question, “what foods should people with diabetes avoid?” and you’ll get the predictable replies like “sweets”; “biscuits”; “fizzy drink”; “cake” etc. What you are unlikely to hear is the list of those really unpredictable things like pizza, Thai, fish and chips and Chinese.

I have to admit I was as clueless as all the rest until a couple of years ago when I really started to actually monitor my BGs. And now I have a new one to add to the list: laksa. My husband makes a mean laksa (after flatting with a Malaysian chap many years ago, he has the dish down to a fine art). We had it for dinner a…

The good news is… Michelle (who did a guest blog last week) gave birth to a healthy baby boy last week, Tyler Murray. Congratulations from all of us, Michelle!! Tyler was 10 pounds 7 ounces. I wanted to make note of his weight because Michelle had HbA1cs in her pregnancy of around 6, so ladies – don’t beat yourselves up if your baby gets bigger, there is only so much of this condition we can fight…. even if you…
