I got this email from a reader last week. Wow – how incredible is her HbA1c?! Would love your feedback on her query below.

I am a T1 who has struggled a lot with keeping my weight in check. While my HbA1c’s are always in the range of 5.7 – 6.0, my weight is always the casualty. I think that partly it has to do with that awkward relationship to food we diabetics have and insulin itself increases appetite. I hate to have to eat if I don’t feel like it and at other times protest against me being diabetic by overeating and then correcting. Is anybody else having problems with that?

I did a Google search of “Low GI” to find a picture to go with this post, and found the one on the right. I thought the question was a good one…. “What’s your diet plan?”…. I think my current answer would be a very long-winded and contradictory one! At the moment I seem to be very good at planning out my son’s meals in great detail but when it comes to myself I suddenly realise I’m hungry and hurriedly try to scramble something together from what I can hunt down in the fridge/the work cafeteria! If it wasn’t for my culinarily-talented (yes I think I just made up a word) husband (and my very kind Mother who often brings…

I was perusing the annals of the internet last week and saw this article on Stuff.co.nz about how scientists have research indicating that fathers with high fat diets may be a cause of diabetes in their daughters?

It feels like there are all sorts of links between so many different conditions (white bread and cancer is one I hear often) and they just keep coming. Certainly, there are links between food and lifestyle which it is essential to know about for preventative measures but I…

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Today is Halloween in Canada and man do they get into it!

Every shop you look at is full of displays with pumpkins and ghouls and decorations, supermarkets are selling autumn wares, huge pumpkins, tiny pumpkins and gourds are filling the shelves and streets outside shops. Party invites are being sent out left right and centre and people are all a flutter talking non stop about what their costumes are going to be. At times I honestly feel like I’m back at high school listening to the girls talking about their ball dresses!

Seriously though, it seems to me that after Christmas, this holiday is the biggest in Canada and people absolutely love getting into it in…
