Well, readers, I’ve not come to this decision lightly. I’ve been going back and forward on it for many months, in fact. But, today I am announcing that BeingDiabetic is going on an extended break in 2011. There are a lot of challenging things coming up for Aaron and I next year and unfortunately this means even less time for the blog. And if I can’t do something of a decent quality, I’d rather not do it at all.
A lot goes on behind the scenes of a blog which you wouldn’t necessarily think of. There’s the obvious: researching and writing posts, finding and cropping images, coming up with interesting polls, reading the latest news on what’s happening in diabetes around the world. There’s a lot of other stuff too: moderating comments, the constant flow of spam. And I get a LOT of emails. I couldn’t bear to leave your emails unanswered so I spend many a night and weekend in front of the computer reading your emails, going to the links you’ve sent me and sending individual replies. Finally there is the creation and admin that goes with the ads on the site which is a monthly grind!
I love writing the blog, and the community we have going here. I just need to have a rest for a while and look after other parts of my life (four day a week job, increasingly boisterous son, upkeep of a house, friends and family etc). And I’m thinking it might even be nice once in a while to even (gasp) sit down on the couch and read a magazine
Thus – after Christmas this year, BeingDiabetic will be going into an indefinite hiatus. You’ve not heard the last of us, but we’ll be a little quieter for a while. The site will stay up here though and there are two and a half years worth of posts to go back through.
Two more weeks of posts and discussions coming up though! Will save all the thank yous and interim goodbyes for 24th Dec.
Nic and Aaron

Totally understand. But I will miss you! I have enjoyed reading your posts and you have often given me food for thought. Both of you have also given me the confirmation that Tyler can indeed lead a long and fulfilling life with D.
Good luck and I hope you both achieve all that you hope to.
Have a good Xmas and a great 2011. xxx

We will miss you! You’ve done such a fantastic job. But yes, I TOTALLY understand – I’ve been having to prioritise myself, in order to stop myself having a nervous breakdown. It is such a huge thing to be a mother and to work, and then to do Being Diabetic on top of it all, which is a job in itself.
Like I said, I’ve been having to figure out what to give up myself, as I have too many responsibilities. I had a diabetic moment yesterday, when I took my 7-year-old to the GP, and tried to get a script for test strips, then she launched into a big lecture about how she couldn’t give it to me without a consult because otherwise it would be negligence. So I was put on the scales and had my blood pressure/pulse etc taken. Of course it was a little high – I was thinking about all the jobs I had to get done that afternoon, and how I really didn’t want to be lectured by this GP!

I have loved reading your blog and hope you have a chance to kick back and relax its a fast paced world so good on you both for deciding to put the brakes on for a while.
I’ll still be here when you decide to crank it up again.

Thanks so much for your lovely comments all. We have loved bringing the blogs to you as well and feel like we know even those of you we’ve never met!
Sarah – I would have been more than a little piqued at the GP

Nic, you have been doing a terrific job with your website, with touches of what’s personal in the life of a T1, touches of the frustrations of getting sense from the medicos, touches of what people really think in the polls you run. Well done!
Of course you need a break, and you should take it, but can’t we all club around a bit and take turns keeping the info flowing? Is it practical to man the site from half-a-dozen different places? What do you think?

Aww bummer, I have only just discovered your blog – I was diagnosed with type 1 in July (I’m 25). And it has been really comforting to read your posts as they are so honest and relevant. I read a lot of other us blogs but its so nice to read something local as its much more relevant. Thank you so much for you contributions. xx
