We’ve talked about this group before on the blog but I was sent this article about it and thought I’d give it another plug.
In short, a group has been set up in Auckland on the last Monday of every month for T1 women planning a pregnancy, who are currently pregnant or who’ve been through a T1 pregnancy. It’s run by a specialist diabetes psychologist and a specialist diabetes midwife (both of whom I’ve met and both of whom I rate very highly).
Unfortunately I work on Mondays as I’d love to go along and give a little back… but I would have been doing whatever I could have to get the time off work before I had my baby – it’s so much better to be able to talk to people going through the same thing as you.
Speaking of sharing stories and asking questions: I’m off to speak at the Diabetes Youth NZ Conference in a week’s time. My presentation is not completely locked down yet. I’m speaking on diabetes and pregnancy. If you were at the conference, what questions would you want to ask me? Pop them in the comments box below and I’ll see if I can address them.
EDIT – one more thing. I’ve had an email from a BeingDiabetic reader who has just found out she is 5 weeks pregnant. She’s looking into getting an obstetrician. Anyone know one (in the Auckland area) who has knowledge about/experience in T1 pregnancies?)
Cheers
Nic

Jo and Gudrun – sounds like you need to do a travelling road show! If you end up doing one in Fiji or Rarotonga, let me know and I’ll make sure I come along to help you out.

I went through Auckland Obstetric Centre and they were pretty good with T1s. Paul Mcpherson is one of the obs there and he also works in the maternity diabetes clinic up at Akld.

With regards to 5 week pregnant reader, I went through Origins (Phillip Beattie) – he was awesome and is very well respected within Auckland Hospital. The care you receive through the Diabetes Clinic is also amazing (having Jo Morgan as my carer) was a blessing – I can’t speak highly enough of her.

I went to this support group today and it was fantastic. I highly recommend it if you are pregnant, thinking about it or a new Mum. I’m 30wks with my second child but am going to try to keep going after she is born. It was so nice to talk to other people with similar experiences to me!
