Daughter was 15 months old, 26/11/92 – I only remember the date as it was her older sisters birthday party next day. I remember thinking at how daft it was racing away from the hospital ( where we’d been told we now had to avoid sugar and fat!) to put cream on a pavlova!

Was about a month before I turned 15. Girls at school \ asked if I was anorexic, usual signs really but slowly developed over a term. Never will forget those cramps or the thirst- or the sugar level 42.8 and family will never forget the smell of my breath!

I was 15 and my mum was fed up with her youngest being so sickly. The next time I had a migraine, she thrust an empty ice cream container into my hand and pointed to the toilet. I realise now that experiences like carrying a warm container of my own urine through the doctor’s waiting room have shaped me in to the shameless adult I am today. And bless her, she was so right.

I was 35, i went to A&E after a fall off my horse, i went in thinking i had a broken rib and came out with diabetes!!! learning this explained why for the last year i had felt like i had a permanent hang over, headaches, tummy cramps, thirst…..im thankful though for my horse bringing this all to light for me
instead of learning the hard way by going into a coma at some point.

I have 2 sons with T1, the younger diagnosed at 9 yrs, the elder at 18 years (3 months before starting at uni). I guess older is always better but there’s never gonna be a good time. Also because we picked it up so quickly and he didn’t get sick he’s still in honeymoon period after 20 months. Does that make him lucky? Hmm, maybe but not sure he’d agree.
