Today is a very special day for me, and I’m doing a little bit of reminiscing. Today is the two year anniversary of BeingDiabetic! Hip hip hooray!
It all began with my first post this time in 2008. I had been married for two and a half months and was right in the middle of trying to get some help/figure out myself how to fix up my crazy blood sugars in order to get a good enough HbA1c to safely conceive a baby. I’d been looking around at as much on the web as I could find, and found plenty of blogs in the U.S about life with T1, but nothing local that had enough substance for me to really sink my teeth into.
Thus, BeingDiabetic was born. Some trivia for you:
- It started as a .blogspot blog, but after about five posts I realised Wordpress was a better publishing tool and moved to that, and put it on its own URL.
- I told Aaron about it at the time, but he didn’t come on board until September, when I went on my honeymoon. His first post is here.
- The first blog had a header which was simply an image of native New Zealand bush taken out of my bedroom window. It was until late August that my very talented friend Nadia did the first branded header for BeingDiabetic (see images below for the progression of the look of the site, click to see them in a larger size)
- The blog now gets on average three times more views in a DAY than it did for the whole month of July 2008.
- Some of the best search terms used to find the site over the last two years: “thirsty, stomach ache, backache sore bum”; “the pump strip club”; “pregnant barbie”.
Anyway, that’s enough rambling on. Thanks so much for continuing to be part of the BeingDiabetic community – world domination is next on the agenda (or perhaps subsidised/free insulin pumps and consumables
)
One last thing – to celebrate the two year anniversary, please join me in voting for BeingDiabetic.co.nz in the Lifestyle category of the Netguide Web Awards, here: http://www.techday.co.nz/webawards – your vote is hugely appreciated, thanks in advance!

THANK YOU! & CONGRATS 2 years is a fantastic achievement Nic & Aaron You guys are truly wonderful HUMAN and informative….
I’ve been a T1 diabetic for 22+ years I am 32 years old and have been isolated with only contact in regards to my diabetes to doc & nurses.
You and the readers have answered almost all of my questions in my head and confirmed my thoughts in my mind.
I’ve recently started reading the beingdiabetic blog and I’m feeling connected and happy and determined to get my hba1c under control!
Thanks again and Ive just cast my vote

Awesome – congrats! As the mother of a recently diagnosed Type 1 10 year old I am loving your blog (and we are celebrating in our house too because yesterday Mr 10 did his first ever injection by himself – not bad after being diagnosed at the end of April)

Happy BeingDiabetic birthday Nic and I share the above comments.
Not checking into DeingDiabetic each day would introduce untold ripples into the BG swings in the current partnership between Disease and me and something above the ordinary needs to keep it all stable.
Like Mel says, it is indeed human and informative in that very special and rare bird down to earth kiwi way, which connects with people of all ages and strains of T1, pumpers and MDI alike and you can be rest assured, the numbers visiting and reading it are as wide as they large. Thank you.

I agree: thank-you so much for this blog.
I’ve always felt the odd one out in my family/group of friends as the only Diabetic person – until a Facebook friend pointed me in the direction of you all and your great advice and support!
It’s great to know we all share the same struggles everyday, and most importantly that i’m not the only one out there !!
Thanks again xx
