Hi all
I’m pleased to tell you that I’ve just entered myself into the Auckland half marathon on Sunday, 31 October. Wahey! I will be power-walking it, mind. Running is no friend of mine! I did it once before, in 2007…. I was a complete walking purist – even Olympic judges would not have been able to spot me with both legs off the ground simultaneously. I completed it in 3 hours, 7 minutes.
This year I will undoubtedly get less time for training, with a little one in the house. But I’m still going to aim to better my time (I’m pumping this year as opposed to MDI last time which slowed me down when I had to stop to take my long acting, so there’s about 90 seconds saved).
This year, also – I will be part of the Unite for Diabetes team which Diabetes Auckland is fielding. You should think about joining us!
I will definitely be hitting you all up for sponsorship in the months to come, so save your pennies please!
Here are the details direct from the Marketing Manager of Diabetes Auckland:
Ever wanted to cross the Auckland Harbour Bridge (33 meters to the highest point) by foot? Well here’s your opportunity. This year Diabetes Auckland is entering a team into the Auckland Marathon. We want to unite for diabetes and have fun doing so.
We are trying to get as many staff, members, friends, supporters and strangers to run, or walk the half or full marathon and at the same time raise much needed funds for Diabetes Auckland by getting work colleagues, friends, and family to sponsor you.

well done – I’ve entered too but the marathon (madness I know!!) I run/walk but my 1/2 marathon times aren’t much quicker than you walking – I’m a very slow runner. closer to the time (and if you’re an Aucklander) would you like to do some training together? I’m planning to do the Taupo 1/2 as well

Way to go Jenny and Tash! I’ll see if Umesh (the marketing manager from Diabetes AKL) is going to organise any training sessions beforehand, could be a good way to meet each other as on the day it will be dark at the start line!

My hubby is doing the full marathon again this year, who isn’t diabetic, I am. But I will be there to cheer him on with our children. Good luck to all running!!

hello keen runners! my training for the marathon is ticking along slowly but surely. Not being a natural runner at all and not having done any real running for quite some time, I’m starting off with small steps (quite literally!!). Tomorrow I have a 5km race then another 5km race in 2 weeks. (cant run 5kms yet so still very green). Was wondering if any of you keen runners in Auckland would like to get together for brunch one weekend to say hi and chat about how training is (or isn’t) going and how you’ve managed trainng/racing in the past. the idea of sitting down, drinking good coffee, eating eggs benedict and talking (but not doing) exercise really appeals. If you’re not planning to do the 1/2 or full marathon but like the idea of brunch, you’d be most welcome to come. There is this great place in St Heliers when you can have great food and watch other people running.
Any takers?

Gah, glad you’ve done some training already Jenny…. can’t say I’ve got that far yet! Umesh Mistry at Diabetes Auckland is running the show on this front, you should get in touch with him to get a gang together

thanks for that. Umesh is coming from a slightly different angle than me though. He is trying to get a team together of people (with diabetes or not) to raise much needed money for diabetes education (predominantly T2) whereas I would like to hear from folks on insulin and how they manage in endurance events (whether they’re a member of Diab Auck or not). When he says in his blurb”…one of the most serious medical problems facing NZers…” he is not talking about T1 – he is trying to educate people about T2. I’m just interested in hearing from other T1 athletes thinking about having a crack at something blimming hard!!!

Hi all,
I realise this has not been commented on for a while but on the off chance anyone reads this I’d like to say :- I am a 49 year old T1 diabetic and I completed the 2010 Auckland Marathon in 5 h 23 min. This was my second marathon since being diagnosed T1 in 2007. It can be done and if anyone would like to talk about it let me know. I’m quite happy to discuss insulin management and training runs.

Bruce – well done!!! I ended up pulling out – just not enough training done to do a marathon. I was there though working – with the ambulance service – very quiet day for us which was nice. Does anyone know if the diabetic group ran? I never heard back from anyone so not sure if it ever got off the ground – shame really.

Jenny – I only found out about the diabetic group after finishing. In fact it was Umesh who directed me to this site.
