Have any of you been following American Idol this year? I have to confess to it: it’s my guilty pleasure. (I have to note that it seems a fair few of my friends who also have young children have resorted to watching this show as well now that we’re not going out as much anymore. However, I can’t just blame my baby. I’ve watched these singing shows for years).
If you have been watching, you’ll recognise the girl above – Crystal Bowersox. She’s doing really, really well in the competition – busting out original-sounding songs week after week and generally getting good feedback from the judges (I’d be keener if she washed her hair, but that’s the nature of having dreads really, innit).
Anyway – about four weeks ago they switched the running order because Crystal had been ill. Turns out she had actually been hospitalised for diabetes complications. Yup, she’s a fellow T1, she even has a profile page on Tu Diabetes. She’s a pumper; she uses a Medtronic pump.
I guess beforehand she would have been one of my top five contestants, but now she’s suddenly shot to number 1! (A feel like a bit of a child for feeling this way, but it’s the truth). I’ve also been on ‘pump-watch’ during her performances and not spotted it yet. Check it out on TV2 tonight at 8:30pm and see if you can see it.
In local news, I also found out that Pebbles Hooper (daughter of Francis Hooper and Denise L’Estrange-Corbet of World fashion fame) is a fellow T1. Pebbles is getting about as a stylist these days but I was thinking maybe we should approach her to facilitate the creation of a fashionable pump holster. What do you think?

OMG! I have to admit I am a not-so-closet Idol fan (is it sad when you wake up excited that today is Friday and not because it’s the end of the working week but because it’s Idol Night?! er, yes … ) Anyway – it was a tie for my number 1 spot between Crystal Rock-My-Sox and Siobhan but sorry Siobhan – Crystal’s just bumped you from my top spot. Thanks for the all important update Nic! And yes, loving your idea to get Pebbles Hooper to design a pumpin’ pouch … maybe even a handbag with compartments for BG monitors, penfill holders …. an internal light for testing in the dark …

I’m not a pumper but I’d kill for a funky BG monitor “purse”. Including some convenient way of storing used test strips if theres no bin around.

I watch it whenever I can and Crystal has been my favourite for ages so I will really be pumping for her to win now (sorry, bad diabetes pun there!).

Yep, I noticed Crystal’s pump a couple of weeks ago when she sang in the red dress and played the piano. I could see it on her left hip under her belt. Pretty cool huh.

Sorry it might have been last week’s performance actually – I watch it online so I know ahead who’s the next one voted off – or ultimately, to see if Crystal is still in the top list cuz she’s my pick now too! haha Funny how we all pull together aye …

I am not up on any of these shows or the present generation of music performers including those to come, to tell the truth, I my group of such folk ends sharply in the early eighties. No, I haven’t ordered my coffin yet, but I have saved for it. Anyway, while searching for info: on Nic’s CGMS technology, I happened upon a revamp of the Archies’ song Sugar, Sugar 1969, by the science groove about 2005 to become Glucose, Glucose and I would not be surprised if you have come across it somewhere in your diabetes travels. I would like to suggest, you send Crystal this as a measure of support from beingdiabetic.
You can hear it at http://www.science-groove.org/Now/Glucose.html

Nic,
I am actually in talks with someone to create a pump holster for my store. I am also in talks to have cycling and running vests that show the medical symbol over the front pocket area. I am expanding!! Keep a look out.

Omg…this is very exciting to me because she has been my favourite from the start….and I am on a Medtronic pump but have just started a “pump Break” because I was reacting to the sites! I was feeling defeated but for some strange reason this helps me to keep positive and try again!

Pleased to hear it Jennifer – enjoy the break!!

Ahaha, I love that I’ve swayed you in the direction of my less than aspirational telly viewing habits, Aaron!!
