Thank you so much to the DYA Press for the latest issue which came through my letterbox last week. There’s an article on page 7 called “Healthy Food Tips” which mentions this website:
http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/npc/index.cfm
The awesome thing about this website is that you can enter a whole recipe into the calculator (in terms of the quantities of ingredients which make up the recipe) and it will give you a full nutritional break-down of how many carbs are in that recipe (as well as the other nutritional measurements).
A question I’ve been posing and been meaning to find the answer to in past is “how many carbs in a cup of flour?”. This is due to us baking a bit of our own bread lately.
I found out how many grams there are in a cup of flour (128) and put it into the calculator – there are 72 grams of carb in every 100 grams of flour.
Unfortunately there’s still plenty of maths to do (in terms of then weighing the entire portion and multiplying the percentages accordingly) but if you have a favourite recipe you make in your household a lot then I can see the above website being quite useful.
To check it out for yourself, go here:

Thanks for that – I’ll bookmark it
Geekily I’ve carb counted my favourite baking and dessert recipes – makes life so much easier doesn’t it?
Here’s hoping you woke up on better numbers this morning.

I’m at the point where carb counting makes me sigh. So much math….

Thanks Saffy, hope yours are better too!
Renata – I hear you! Especially with two diabetics in your household. This is where pumps come in handy, even if just to minimise the maths a little bit.

This site is fantastic for me. I’ve started making a lot of our own foods including breads and lentil curries and it can be really hard to calc the CHO.
It’s on the bookmark bar!

Can somebody please explain in simple language how this site works. thought I could input recipes and then voila I would know the carb amounts.

Hi Amanda,
It is a bit confusing but here goes:
1. Search for the ingredient under the ingredients tab and once found select, ‘Add Ingredient’ ( you have to add the grams used at this point though).
2. Back on the recipe page (you get taken there automatically) you can see the ingredients listed on the left and the recipe details on the right. If you make a loaf of bread for example and the whole thing weighs 1KG then you input that into the ‘Final weight’ area.
3. Weight the serving and enter that into the ’serve size’ field and it’ll give you the CHO content in there in the Qty per serve column of the recipe
Certainly not the most inspiring user interface or design but it works well once you get the hang of it!

Thank you so much Aaron. If it’s not reasonably straightforward for me – this computer stuff – I tend to give up and hope that someone can help me.
Terrible I know but hey, what the hang!
