You’ve heard Aaron and I both getting thrown by the unexpected low number of carbs in popsicles. (here and here).
The other night I got another surprise about the surprisingly high number of carbs in the pita bread I was eating (55 grams!)
What other foods have you been taken aback by which were much higher or lower in carbs than you would have thought?

Milk! I didn’t ever think that milk had carb in it but lo-and-behold it sure does. I used to drink litres of it when I was high because I found it quenched my thirst better.
I also clearly remember the shock of the paediatric nurses in 1991 as an 8 year old when the nurses at Timaru public hospital discovered that Just Juice has CHO in it despite it saying “No added sugar” on the packet! A crack up now but not so funny at the time really…

Thai takeaways – how much sugar do they put in the sauces? You’d think a chicken dish would be safe, but I gave myself a heap of insulin last night but still I was 17 2 hours after. Also naan bread – I love it, but I avoid eating it since one piece is about 70 grams. Actually Indian food can be carbo crazy – what with the basmati rice and lentils that take a couple of hours to actually reveal their carbo hearts. Times like that I wish I had a pump for square boluses.

there is something crazy going on with Indian and Thai food. The carbs in it seem to pack a punch even hours later – often I’ll think I’ve ‘got away’ with it if I measure my BG an hour or two later but four hours later I’ll be at 15 or 16. I avoided altogether in pregnancy, just too hard to control, even with a combo bolus (would find it hard to match up the insulin when the carb punch was going to hit)…

Tell me about it. I used to HATE eating out because I never know what is going in – you just can’t tell and I find that I almost always go high or low as a consequence.
Chinese food is like that too. My solution – eat meat. Always.

Tip for Thai add 50% more insulin 40% up front 60% spread over 6 hours….. Works for us after much trail and error. The Key is 50% more carbs than you work out.
