Last week Aaron and I locked and loaded our flights to Nelson and back for Diabetes Youth Conference 2009 in late August.

If you’re interested in coming you should check out the programme. Presentations I’m personally looking forward to as follows:

Xenotransplantation progress – Professor Bob Elliot, Living Cell Technologies
The Role of Psychology in the management of diabetes – Dr Kirsty Ross, Clinical Psychologist, Massey University
Latest technology and treatments – Dr Craig Jefferies, Paediatric Endocrinologist, Starship Hospital
Diabetes in the family – Elissa Renouf
Riding on Insulin – Sean Busby, Champion Snowboarder

Let me know if you’re also going…. and if you’re not, I promise I’ll take some notes and fill you in on what goes on.

I love baking. I’m really not all that great at cooking, but baking is something I really enjoy and am not too bad at. So, when my best friend said she was having her Mum’s 60th birthday party at her house and catering for 40 people, I offered to lend a hand by baking a huge stack of cupcakes in lieu of dessert (it also gave me an excuse to buy a reaaaallly cute cupcake book at Milly’s Kitchen which I’ve had my eye on for ages).

The result – 42 very rich cupcakes (see pic on right – there were two cake stands like this in the end).

This post could possibly be seen as just an excuse to put a gorgeous pic of Fiji in (and it partly is – ahhhh, wouldn’t you love to be going there!).

However I wanted to mention a couple of things about travel insurance which I’ve learnt lately.

This being the case, Saturday avo found me attending one of these winter weddings while it poured down outside and I wouldn’t normally bother to tell you about this save for the diabetic hilarity that surrounded it.

3…2…1…

I don’t know about you guys but I’ve had about 4 colds this winter already and the…

As I’ve said before, if you’d told me five years ago I’d be willingly heading off for dinner with seven other T1s I would have absolutely laughed in your face.

But – this is exactly what happened one Thursday late last month (June). Eight of us from 23yrs+ caught up for a meal in central Auckland and it was a really nice night. There was a good spread of age ranges there, and there were pumpers and MDI givers alike. There were two preggy ladies there, and two women who already have children. There were people who’d had diabetes for 20 years plus, and those who’d been diagnosed within the last year. The only ratio which was out of whack…
