This happened to me last night and I have to say that every time it happens I think to find out the best course of action and never quite do.

Scenario:

Just before dinner I test at 4.4
Eat a carb rich dinner but avoid taking insulin til after meal because I was pretty low going in
Eat dinner and as I finish, realise I’m low
Test – 2.5

So, in last night’s case, I had just consumed 40g of carb so eventually that is going to bring me back up again. But then I’m at 2.5 so I need to have some fast acting glucose. But – with all that slow acting carb holding things up it’s questionable how…

Well, I’ve ‘heard’ it all now (excuse the pun). Definitely not one of the ‘poster’ side effects of diabetes, but apparently the American Diabetes Association now has proof that hearing loss is one of the knock ons from poor glycaemic control. Boooooo.

I have to say that if I start going deaf I’m definitely going to blame all the time I spent working in bars and clubs (and frequenting them) in my 20s, and not some lame medical excuse. Viva la rock n roll.

I know that Nic had a bit of a shocker with her pump over the weekend but I have to admit that I myself had a stunner (BGs notwithstanding) catching up with 5 nieces and nephews, inlaws and finally finding a replacement vacum cleaner bag which has eluded me for the last 8 months among much else. The weather was good, it wasn’t overly cold and I didn’t have to work – excellent.

That said, things are going to get a little different for me soon as resigned from my current job last week to take up another position in another company! Hooray! I’m not resistant to change by any means but it can be a little unsettling etc which…

Ohhhhhhhh. Bleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeurgh. Have had the worst night in a long time overnight. My trusty insulin pump gave up the ghost at 10:20 last night as I was driving home after dinner with friends. I did all the things the manual says to do and got it going for about 20 mins at a time until 11:30-ish when after the sixth time it screamed its siren at me and went blank I gave up on it.

Obviously, being reliant on basal insulin going in every three minutes and not having that means if you don’t do something quickly, you will test and be at an 18 or 20+ mmol/l within a couple of hours. Which is not an option. Particularly when…
