Today – May 23 – marks my 15 year anniversary with diabetes. It was this day back in 1994 that I sat in Dr Rick Cutfield’s office and he confirmed for me that I was a type 1 diabetic, and I would be injecting insulin for the rest of my life. And so far, he has been right!!

The gift for a 15 year anniversary is either crystal (traditional) or a watch (modern). Not sure I’ll purchase either, but during this year I’ll be purchasing an insulin pump, which among other things will tell me the time – does that count? Will be about 500 times more expensive than any other watch I’ve ever bought!

Ooooh, just found this article about a new concept being publicised for diabetes, called the Gluco-M Wristband. According to the article, this band has been designed to give a continuous glucose reading as well as give injections (you take it off your wrist for that and do it in a normal injection site).
Now – being a ‘concept’ is pretty much a euphemism for “likely to never happen” or “not likely to happen in any hurry”, so don’t get yourselves too excited…. but it doesn’t hurt to dream and how RAD would that be?? Not sure I’d be into the injection bit (happy to keep on pumping or using needles for that) but

One of the things I’ve been doing since being on this HbA1c-lowering buzz around pre-pregnancy and now pregnancy is to monitor, monitor, monitor blood sugars. For me it’s the only way to keep a tight lid on them and catch those highs which sometimes get away on you.

To keep a handle on things this can sometimes mean as many as 15 blood sugar prick tests a day (if I have lows or highs or exercise I end up doing more).

During the pregnancy I’ve been keeping this up (it’s more crucial than ever) but with a really heavy workload over the last three weeks, as well as being exhausted from being a host organ, plus for some reason having…

Several months ago I got a lovely email from a NZ woman named Kris, who told me her story about being a parent of a young child with type 1. It really made me think how amazing these parents are, and I asked Kris if she’d like to do a blog. Here’s her story.

I started reading Nic’s blog last year and have enjoyed it very much (even though I don’t have Type 1 myself, I am a mum to one) When I emailed Nic to tell her how much I liked her blog, she asked if I’d do a guest blog on being a parent of a Type 1, so here it is! My youngest daughter, who is 6,…

I’ve done this one a couple of times now so thought I’d write about it and see if anyone else out there has done this same thing!

I’m one of those old-fashioned types who uses bars/cakes of soap in the shower (unless I’m at the gym). All well and good until you (in your sleepy morning haze) soap over your cannula and get thick soap across the bit where the needle goes in and delivers the insulin. Hmmm. Did it last week and again this week…. managed to not impede the insulin delivery either time thankfully but I’m sure one day the insulin will have trouble getting through the layer of soap I’ve added to the infusion set sitting on…
