As the world gets more and more agitated by bird flu sorry that should be swine flu, I thought it was quite forward-thinking of Living Cell Technologies (who are involved in the pig cell trials for T1 diabetes) to send out a press release assuring us that none of their patients are in any danger of contracting the pig flu:

Living Cell Technologies Limited, today emphasized that its pig cell product, DIABECELL® presently in Phase I/IIa clinical trial for the treatment of insulin dependent diabetes, is free of pig viruses, bacteria and parasites. In the wake of recent reports of a new strain of influenza virus in Mexico and the United States, LCT referred…

I have yet another confession to make. It’s a confession that the me of five years ago would have cringed at, and coiled away from in shame. Shows how we mellow with age!

My confession: on Thursday night last week, I met up with five other T1 diabetics for a drink and some food. And I was the instigator. And I really enjoyed it! I’m not gonna name and shame any of them, well apart from you, Aaron. Basically it was Aaron, myself, a girl he met through his pump start, a girl I know from school days (and via my brother’s girlfriend), and two other girls who have made contact with me via this very blog. Having regained some form of normality since I got hitched, I’ve finally got myself together enough to get to the keyboard and write out some ideas for the blog. I’ve got a few which I won’t give away all at once but let me start by saying that everything went so well on the day and I don’t think I’ve ever had a better party. Save for the normal incidents (like being 15mmol/L during the ceremony) there were no comas, seizures or mishaps to mention so all in all I’m quite stoked really. I was interested to see on the Animas website this week that they have set up a deal capitalising on the demise of the Smiths Cozmo insulin pump. They are offering Cozmo owners in the States a deal where they can trade in their current Cozmos for a new One Touch Ping Animas pump for just $US700. With today’s exchange rate, that’s $NZ1,224. With that they will honour the existing warranty left on your Cozmo. Doesn’t sound like a bad deal to me if you could afford it…. and lived in the U.S .

Feeling very sorry for myself this morning. I’ve been having toothache the last three nights, and last night it got so unbearable I considered driving 10km to the nearest A & E at 3:30am. I managed to hang on til this morning when I got myself a 10am dentist appt. Turns out it’s a root canal – which will be somewhere in the region of $2,200.

That on top of buying an insulin pump this year puts me in the range of around $10,000 just there….. I better keep my head down and hope I keep my job!! Touch wood I sail through the rest of the year without any other medical mishaps.
