When I went round to see my friend Lucy with her young baby son, I was really interested to talk to her husband – he mentioned how hard it is also for partners of diabetics – for different reasons. It got me thinking… so I asked my husband to write a post on just that subject. Here it is. Pass it on to your partners and loved ones, I’m sure there will be a few heads nodding in agreement.

Nic’s the second type one diabetic I have been out with. It’s not some weird fetish, just happenstance.  (Honest!) But in some ways having already been through the Q+As with my previous girlfriend meant that I didn’t have to pepper Nic…

It’s been a fantastic Auckland Anniversary weekend – no, not because I’ve had good blood sugars, absolutely far from it. (After waking with a 20 something on Saturday, I woke with an 18 something on Sunday then got it down and then it rocketed back up into the 20s in the late afternoon for no apparent reason, VERY frustrating).

Anyway – the reason it’s been such a great weekend is because it’s been absolutely faultless weather for one, and secondly because this morning I went on my very first ever beekeeping excursion – yeah!

I was offered the chance to go fishing on my friend’s fancy work boat on the same morning, and while the thought of gallivanting about…

It’s a long weekend up here in Auckland this weekend, and I’ve got off to a pretty yukky start. Woke up with a completely inexplicable 22.5. The worst thing is – I was awake at 4:45am so did a quick BG test then (I hardly ever test in the night) and it was 8.6 so I topped up with an extra unit. Then, just four hours later it’s at a whopping 22.5. My pump shows no signs of not delivering (no blockage messages, cannula still intact etc) so I’ve given myself a huge correction bolus and now have that long wait for it to come down. I reckon it will take about three hours til I’m anywhere near a BG…

One of my colleagues was talking to me today about her pending trip to India and how much stuff she has to take and so I started telling her about how I want to go overseas permanently fairly soon.

We’re thinking about going to either 1)France cos we’ve lived there before or 2) Canada because it will be the best of the English and French speaking worlds and my partner can have an easier career as a musician woriking in his native language while I work happily in either. We’re far from any form of organised with this obviously (not that it’s pie in the sky) but me being me dreaming about all the details in advance I suddenly…

I went to my GP on Tuesday for a non-diabetes related issue. She mentioned how well I’d done with my HbA1c over the last year. Almost in the same breath, she absolutely baulked when I told her I do around ten BG tests a day. She visibly gasped – and proceeded to tell me I was doing way too much and should think about cutting back to three. I took a deep breath and paused, and tried to be calm when explaining to her that the only way I’ve managed to get said HbA1c down that low is through testing and keeping on top of what my blood sugars are doing. I mean, let’s think about an average day broken…
