I know… people are only being interested and I’m sure it’s a pretty valid question, but if I can have a little moan for a minute (hey, I’m only getting four or five hours sleep a night
), I have to say I’m getting pretty sick of this question.
My standard response is “no, not yet that we know of, but he could get it at 3, 14, 28 or 50 years of age as could any of us” and then I rattle off the stats. Stats as follows:
- General population: 0.4%
- Paternal offspring: 6-9%
- Maternal offspring: 1-4%
- Siblings: 5-6%
- HLA-identical siblings: 16%
- Identical twins (if one twin has T1): 33-50%

I wouldn’t dwell on it either!

God, your poor thing. I wouldn’t even try to back it up with any stats, just say “no, is your child a dumbass?”. I guess some things must be genetic, right?!

Oh for gooodness sake ignore those cretins. Tell them to put a sock in it or else if they’re
really interested then google.
Case in point, at the gym, for some reason explained had an insulin pump then was asked “are you a diabetic”?
General population interested in us and ignorant. We all get tired of it so must make a stand.
how’s that beautiful baby? beautiful photo!

I get a bit paranoid on occasions though – I tested my 6-year-old’s sugars when he was particularly tired and cranky and it was 10.5. I took him to the GP and she agreed that he was probably developing diabetes and sent him off for a pile of tests. But then I talked to a diabetes nurse and she said that non-diabetics could be up to 11.1 after a meal, and Otto had just eaten ice cream. Otto’s tests have so far come back normal but we are still waiting on the antibody one.

ha Ha ha – love Tory’s response – I just tell people my kids are more likely to get it if their fathers diabetic (blame the men, bah ha ha). Sarah – I get paranoid too, especially when my 4-year old has wet his pants (he has been daytime toilet trained for over a year) though I haven’t quite got to blood testing him yet – interesting to know that non-diabetics BG can rise too that high as well
