I know I’ve talked to you all before about what you do for treating hypos and I know you’re not all glucose tablets ‘fans’, but for me glucose tablets are the best (not the only) choice for having in my drawer at work or in my handbag, the two main reasons being (a) they actually look like medication so if I’m eating them in a meeting it doesn’t look like I’m just chowing down on some ’sweeties’ for the hell of it and (b) friends/workmates/myself are not tempted to eat them just as a treat.

Over at Diabetes Mine, they’ve announced a new product in the States which is known as “Diabetes Bits”. (http://www.diabetesmine.com/2009/06/glucose-bits-are-here.html) The good thing about these little numbers is that they are only one carb a piece. One of the things I really needed to teach myself when trying to get better with my diabetes was not to over-treat hypos, so I started to pay attention to how much carb I was feeding myself to treat a low. Currently with the Dextro tablets they are 4g a tablet, which can sometimes get a little tricky to work out if I’m really low and my brain’s not working. Like Ray Charles did with his pay packet (get it in $1 bills so he could count it even though he was blind), having 1g glucose tablets might make life easier when low and a bit dulled on the old brainpower. Or – alternatively it might just be a pain in the arse…. shaky hands counting out small tablets and potentially dropping them, plus ultimately more stuff to carry around. I dunno.

It would be good to have more than three different products to choose from though in the NZ market – I think that would help with costs too (Dextro tablets have just gone up in price too).
