I just had something of a collection of diabetes incidents, all within about half an hour of each other.
- In client meeting, at client premises…. My pump post-prandial alarm goes off to take a test. I open my pottle of strips and discover it empty – a-haaa, that’s why there’s a spare pottle in my bag though y’see! I get out the spare pottle which was in my bag and realise I’ve tricked myself…. It’s an empty one.
- Then, about four minutes later my pump alarm goes off…. It had gone off that morning because I had less than 20u of insulin left so I’d got a vial out of the work fridge to get it to room temp. Unfortunately I’d been running between meetings all morning and not had time to fill up a new cartridge and now I’ve got a pump with zero insulin left in it.
- Thankfully on both fronts it was a short meeting and that particular client is just down the road from work, so less than half an hour I was back at my desk fixing up the two problems. I also have a spare pottle of test strips in my drawer.
- Unfortunately, for some reason the spare pottle of test strips I had in my drawer at work have something wrong with them and every one of them is throwing up an ‘E-5′ error
And now my BG is up at 13.0, probably due to the loss of basal insulin (I hope it’s that as that means it will come right soon) – will have to try to organise myself better next time around!!

Hi Nic,
I can so relate to this blog, unfortunately I seem to have these seemingly regularly! BG’s is most likely as you said the Basal loss, important not to stress as well, as our lovely liver releases extra stored sugars, just to complicate things more.
Currently my BG’s are all over the place as work has been stressful (job security and work load). I have made an appointment with my DB nurse to see what can be done. I suffer quite a bit of sensitivity to insulin so if I’m not on or just above target I’m Looowwww.
So I have stopped Protophane and sticking with novo when I eat, until I see my nurse, as the low’s really hit me hard.
I believe I may be now going to be using Lantis (24Hr) for my background and reduced Novo for when I eat. I am also enrolled for DAPHNE course at waitakere Hospital. Let you know how I get on.
Have a great day and thanks for this outstanding blog
Cheers Ears,

sorry to hear its been so difficult, doug but you are def going to learn a trick or two on DAFNE from accounts i have had from other people i know who have been on it. i had another complete shocker today with a bent cannula when I changed it this morn which had my BG at 19.1 by 9:30, then got it down again by lunch time, then by mid afternoon again it was up at 15.9… so by the time I finished work at 6:30, the corrections had all caught up w me and Id crashed to 2.9! am going to get a bit of stuff done around the house then call it a day i think!!
