So it turns out that being both pregnant, and diabetic just turns you into a pretty difficult customer. Those who’ve read my blog before will know I hate to make a fuss… And I continue to feel that way but feel like it’s getting harder not to!
Last night I had a client party for a huge project we (their agency) and they have completed over the last year. The format promised drinks, nibbles and a DJ. I figured the DJ would be the least of my worries, but of course Michael Jackson went and died and the DJ insisted on playing a ratio of one MJ song to every two ‘normal’ songs, which frankly I consider a danger to my, my baby’s and everyone else in the room’s health.
Then, we get on to the drinks situation. I offer one of the guys a beer then head over to the ice bins in the corner to survey the non-alcoholic options. Awesome. Options consist of Coke, Coke, or Coke (yup, the full sugar kind). Often people will at least chuck in an orange juice (still not helpful but at least they’re trying) or some token bottles of water, but for the preggy diabetic girl there’s a big fat zero to offer on the drinks front. KNEW I should have taken my own thermos and an array of herbal teas!
On to the food. Now, there’s a recession on so fancy catering is so last year already. What had been laid out on some tressle tables was a pretty nice looking spread though… Lovely big fluffy white bread buns with big bowls of salad, sauces and cold meats to make yourself a sarnie. Problem with being pregnant however is you must say no to cold meats and salad which has been sitting around. The white bread buns, however are doable so I’m thinking about a 2/10 on the food front.
Anyway – I’m not whinging about the catering really as I realise my requirements are pretty narrow for my two conditions at the moment… Definitely narrows down lunch buying options too, meaning you’re now avoiding high sugar items, anything with raw eggs (eg mayo), anything that’s been sitting on display for a while (like sandwiches and sushi) and anything with shellfish, uncooked/not thoroughly cooked meat. There’s a really handy sushi place across the road and as much as it hurt me to look at all that sushi I can’t eat (I love sushi!), I bravely walked past a couple of times and bought some chicken teriyaki that I could nuke back at the office. Unfortunately both times I’ve done that I’ve had high BGs all afternoon, so have counted that option out too, along with fish and chips, Thai, Indian or pizza! What a drama queen!
Tonight I’m off to a wedding which I’m dreading from a food point of view. There’s no formal sit down meal, just cocktails and canapes. I’m sure I’ll be able to swing a couple of lime and sodas and diet cokes, but I imagine most of the canapes will be a pregnancy no go. Gonna take a few supplies in my handbag – no sexy purses for me tonight! Wish me luck.

How did it go? (the wedding I mean)?

Oh yeah, diabetes, pregnancy and cocktail parties is a hideous combination. Last time I was pregnant and at a wedding, I had to leave the venue and go down the road to find something I could eat – a stale cheese sandwich (all the chicken, salmon and ham ones were listeria territory.) The first thing I’m having after giving birth this time round is a big pack of sushi filled with raw fish – they actually encourage you to go a little high for a few days after.

Oh yes, Sarah, sushi is definitely on the list post partum – yum! and it is going to be such a relief to be having BGs which affect just me for a while and not the baby as well
Aaron – it went well thanks… No dramas re variety of non alcoholic drinks, even got an orange juice in to cover a low BG. The food was the expected minefield however with only a couple of small dishes meeting the criteria. I’m not gonna lie to you, there was a stop for food on the drive home!
