Well, I’m sure we could all argue that almost every hypo is inappropriate, but there are some which are more inappropriate or inconvenient than others.
Earlier in the week I was at the hospital, clothes around ears, belly out, gel all over it, having a scan for my baby. The room was nice and warm then gradually felt a bit too hot and I was left wondering “am I low or is it just hot in here”? After deliberating for about five minutes I asked my husband to fish in my bag for my BG tester for me, so next thing you know I’ve got a woman standing over me rubbing an electronic device over my gel-ly belly and someone else pricking my finger and taking my glucose for me… what a palaver! Sure enough I was 2.8 and had to start furiously munching on glucose tablets.
Other inappropriate lows of late have been part way through a root canal procedure,( just waited that one out, for better or worse), at the start of a yoga class (you’re not supposed to eat or drink for a couple of hours before, let alone actually IN the class) and at the movies (cue testing in the dark and loud rustling in my bag for glucose tablets.
All in a day’s work for us T1s eh? Got any good stories yourselves? I liked Sara-M’s one about the wedding a while back, and my other friend was getting a buggy demonstration in a posh Auckland baby shop recently and almost flaked out, which was slightly better than when she actually keeled over in the supermarket and almost vomited.

17 years ago, Jan and I went for a holiday in Noosa, Queensland, and on the evening of the last day, we went to a restaurant. I was on MDI then and certainly did not have the experience that I now have. We ordered our meals (thinking it would take at the most half an hour for them to arrive). I had my injection (Actrapid) after ordering. We then discussed our holiday and the wonderful time that we were having. Meals duly arrived and I thought that I was feeling a bit strange, so I started eating the carb food on my plate (last I remembered). Apparently Jan then asked if I was alright – answer “of course, I’m bloody alright!” She asked again with the same answer! Then she ripped open the paper bags of sugar on the table and tried putting them in my mouth. She maintains that I just about bit her fingers off. I became conscious when I was lying on the floor and Jan and the waitress were hovering over me. (Ambulance was already on it’s way.) Chef was running around wondering what he had put in my food! I then had a large glass of pure orange juice – wonderful. Climbed up off the floor and started getting stuck into my meal again. Ambos arrived and would not let me fininsh and carted my off to see duty doctor. Old bloke who had no idea of how to use BG meters! Then got a taxi back to our accommodation. From the time I became conscious to after having a shower, sweat was just pouring off me. I was feeling absolutely washed out for most of the next day as well! The flaming restaurant made Jan pay for our meals too! From that episode onwards I never had my injection until I saw the food arrive in front of me. Travel insurance is a wonderful thing.

This wasn’t inappropriate just recent and funny at the time…..typical midnight hypo behaviour.
Night before last
I am staying with my sister this week (flatmate is away, they have burgled a few to many times recently…..I’m and unpaid bodyguard)
Due to too much talking and not enough concentrating, gave myself a little tooooo much Humalog N before bed, realised as it was going in, thought, oh well I will be having a midnight snack tonight (I didn’t want to eat more then as I was quite high already, it was one of those messy days)
Woke up at 2am, in a panic leaped out of bed sweating like a pig, reached for the light switch, and banged into a wall that is not usually in my room, screamed as I was staring straight into the eyes of someone…..me in a mirror, that wasn’t in my room though I had been thinking of buying one….WHAT,
Came to my senses realised I had prepared myself for this before going to bed, shook some sense into myself, remembered what house I was in, and proceeded to find some honey, followed by a delicious white bun with yummy yummy Camembert.
I was still really hot and dripping sweat, so turned off heater in my room…..I woke up FREEEEEEEEEZING COLD.
