…. and throwing cash at my condition.

I spoke to my specialist today about the disappointing outcome of the Minimed CGMS and asked what I could do about a referral to a Dexcom real time CGMS. It sounded like getting my insurance company to cough up for a month of leasing this (for $500) is nigh on impossible. Apparently they argue that I could instead take my BM every half hour…. obviously these people have never had to wake up repeatedly in the night.

I’ve always been a pretty impulsive person so I made the decision there and then that I’ll just raise the funds myself and dive on in. I rang Justin from www.insulinpumps.co.nz and he’s…

Very interesting. I saw an article come through today saying a two-year Israeli study published in the New England Journal of Medicine last week “shows low-carb and Mediterranean diets helped patients lose more weight and lowered their cholesterol and sugar levels more than patients on low-fat or non-restricted carb diets”. See the full article here.

It makes perfect sense for those of us on insulin…. less carbs = less overall insulin; less insulin = less bulking.

I’m a pretty rational person but I have to say I’m sure I eat too many carbs. I have it in my head that I need them to fill me up. I’m going to have to take another look at my…

So I came across this link at lunch time today and have been looking forward to checking it out all afternoon, but waited til after work so I could watch the video in detail.

You can enter your blood sugar at any time of the day and it will record it against the time on the phone. Absolutely no good for monitoring what you were doing in relation to it (exercise, carbs etc) and also no chance to enter BMs retrospectively…. pretty shoddy really, shall be giving that one a…

It’s been a long day at work and I mistakenly typed in beingdiabetic.com when I went to do this update…. and found that there is actually a book called ‘Being Diabetic’ (see pic). Might have to check that out. Has anyone read it?

You may notice there have been some subtle design changes to beingdiabetic since last time you came along – yes I’ve been doing a bit of DIY. I’m no great shakes in the web coding department but with a little bit of tinkering I’ve managed to cancel out that yukky brown and make the links a bit more visible.

I’m in the middle of one of the biggest launches of my career at the moment and working 12, 13, 14 hour days so these improvements are happening slowly! But give me the benefit of the doubt and in a short while you might even see a nicer header image (the current one is a snap I took from the balcony…
