I’ve been in denial for a while, even with getting on the scales at the hospital a few weeks ago. With the sole focus lately having been my blood sugars, you’d think I’d be fit, healthy, spritely, and above all, slim.
Not so. Not that I’m a complete porker (depending on your perspective of course, I imagine if you live in an African country you would probably think I was pretty gynormous), but I have to say I’m not in the best shape I’ve been in my life lately.
Thus, I dusted off my old Weight Watchers books on the weekend and have added that to the measuring, weighing and scrutising of my food. Hey – what’s one more thing to calculate?
I’d like to blame it on my diabetes entirely, and I think there is a portion of the blame to be put on my reasonably strict attention to blood sugars, which ultimately results in more hypos, and more food to correct hypos. But I really don’t think I can get away with blaming it on the diabetes.
Secondly, I really think I’ve been doing myself no favours on the exercise front. I’m still very much fine-tuning my insulin pump therapy post-exercise and have managed only a handful of times not to fall into a hypo at some point mid morning or early afternoon, again resulting in a bit of calorie intake to pull myself out.
Thirdly – having a pump has made me curious as to what ‘normal’ foods I can get away with… and have had the odd ice cream or piece of cake, which I didn’t previously do all that much.
But mostly, I’ve been slack on portion control, greedy at barbeques (who can resist all those lovely pre dinner snacks? Not me, clearly) and poor with my cooking and food preparation in advance (working big hours doesn’t help but cannot be used as the sole excuse).
So, with that – I’m going on a diet. Well – not a diet in the sense of a yoyo diet, but one of those ones where you re-bond with food and try to get back into those good habits. I’ve got a few kilos going spare. Gah.
