If you read this and took a double take, you were right to – unfortunately I still have diabetes and the title of this post is about what other people have been saying to me lately.
I hate to moan, but last night I woke up in the night at 2.4, stumbled downstairs, ate some glucose, got up in the morning with a 15.4 (overdid the glucose I’m thinking) then went to the gym and had to keep an eye on my glucose all the way through class after taking a correction, then tried some new things with my pump (in relation to the exercise) all day, and now at 7pm I’ve taken 12 tests and had one recent hypo which meant I had to stop work for about 15mins because my brain simply failed to engage – and I have loooooads to do and want to go home.
This doesn’t make me all that gracious about having diabetes today.
So, when a pregnant girl from work comes up to me and complains about having to do the test for gestational diabetes today (where you have to drink 50grams of carb/sugary liquid and then have some bloods taken) I wasn’t all that sympathetic to be honest.
This is probably because last week I had another workmate who had a ‘diabetes scare’ where she was told by her doctor that she possibly had diabetes. So she did all the tests, and I was very concerned about her etc, and then when she got the tests back, she came running up to me and went “I don’t have diabetes!!” and jumped up and down.
Now, don’t get me wrong – I really don’t wish diabetes on anyone and whenever I hear that someone I know (or even a friend of a friend) gets it, I am genuinely sad and concerned (especially when it’s a kid or teenager). It’s just not that cool when people are so insensitive when they are cleared of it. We will not ever get the chance to jump up and down and shout those words, well not until Professor Elliot comes to our rescue.
