I came across this article recently and while it sounds like a particularly horrible thing to have happen (to summarise: a school nurse injected five teachers with insulin instead of a flu vaccine), it did answer a question I’ve pondered a few times – what happens if a non-diabetic gets injected with insulin?
I guess this answers it – if it’s a small amount, even if it’s intravenous – it will not kill said non-diabetic. I always assumed it would be close. You’d have to eat a pretty big handful of jelly snakes to get yourself out of that one I’m thinking!
(What has sparked this thought before is when people do that little joke with you – you know the one, I’m sure you’ve had it before…. “What happens if I inject myself with this? Will I get really high?”. For some reason people seem to think they’ll end up like a character from Trainspotting if they inject our insulin. Have they seen us slumping into some sort of opiate-like rush from the 8+ injections we do daily? Do they reeeeallly think we’d be holding down a job if so??)

I had 3 months of insulin, syringes and pens stolen once and I woke to the sound of an ambulance screaming past, when back to sleep and then learned what had happened (it was at a hostel). Ask the guy that nicked it cos I’m sure he’ll have something to say and it won’t be thanks…
