Ever noticed how one of the first things people say to you when you say you’re diabetic is something like “oh so does that mean you can’t eat sweets and ice cream?”. I used to answer with a ‘yes, that’s right’ just to keep things simple, and also because that’s the sort of thing we were told back in the day when I was diagnosed.
I think most of us who’ve been diagnosed for 10+ years still probably avoid sweet/sugary foods out of pure habit or the guilty feeling we get while eating them, while some of our contemporaries have been schooled from the start that as long as they bolus for the carbs in the food they’re eating, they are free to have them as they please.
Anyway – I rarely eat ice cream, but indulged in a beautiful two scooper (orange choc chip and goody goody gum drops) down by one of Auckland’s West Coast beaches this afternoon. It was bloody AWESOME. Perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. AND – I got away with it. My BG was 4.7 pre ice cream and 6.7 an hour post ice cream. As John Campell would say, MARVELLOUS.

Sweet! No pun intended – that is completely worth it a few times over summer!

Yeah – totally worth it – not that I plan on eating ice creams every weekend (I already have a number of kilos to lose after winter), but sometimes it’s just nice to know the opportunity’s there.
