I got back to work this week after a 5 day holiday in the South Island for my Mum’s 50th birthday party and I have realised while I was away just how much I depend on routine to keep things in sync as far as my blood glucose goes.

I get up at 7:23 and have a shower, get dressed, am at work by 8:30am and I do a blood test, have my long acting, a bowl of bran and inject the 5.5u of novorapid that I take every morning because it is just easier to eat the same thing every day and not have to think about it too much. Quite tragically, I also tend to have the same thing for lunch (soup in winter and salad in summer) because it really is just that much easier so I will be intrigued to see if not having long acting and being able to miss a meal if I want to sleep in till 10:30am on the weekend will be easier with the pump without waking at 8am to take glargine. I feel like an old man!

In other news, I heard from Nic who is loving the trip so far and it seems that travelling with a pump has the thumbs up from her too…

“travelling with a pump is brilliant. When you’re standing at one of the world’s busiest intersections (Shibiya) and you want to bring your blood sugar down, no more worrying about getting out a needle, trying to keep your stuff secure while all the time trying to inject yourself and protect yourself from being bumped… It’s all so easy, plus noone’s staring at you. The pump just looks like a phone or an mp3 player. I’ve also not experienced the usual rollercoaster of highs and lows I normally get on holiday. Viva la Pump!” – Nic

Monday here I come.
