One of the main things which finally got me to set up this blog is that I’m finally on the road to an insulin pump.

I’ve been having all sorts of problems overnight lately (quite possibly dawn phenomenon) – going to bed with perfect 6-ish blood sugars and then waking up with BMs as high as 16 (one morning recently it was 19.9). Totally ridiculous, and so frustrating, when I’ve been making a huge effort during the day – taking 10 or so finger prick tests and micro managing my injections (I’m on Lantus as a basal and Humalog as short acting).

My last HbA1c came in at 7.8 which I was really cross about, especially after all the work I’ve been putting in. All I can think is that it’s mainly due to these crazy high morning blood sugars.

So – I’ve made the decision to go on an insulin pump. I’m waiting for an appointment with the pump team which should come any day.

Meanwhile, tomorrow I’m going to get hooked up to a continuous blood glucose monitor for 48 hours so we can finally see what the heck is going on while I sleep (I’ve ruled out midnight sleepwalk-eating). I’m looking forward to getting that insight, if a little apprehensive about being hooked up to a machine 24/7 for the first time. Better get used to it if I plan to get on the pump.

Will let you know how I get on.
